Cen Bank governor doesn't expect pressure from new gov't

Croatian National Bank (HNB) Governor Boris Vujcic has said in an interview with the commercial broadcaster RTL that it is the central bank that pursues Croatia's monetary policy and that he does not expect any pressure from the future cabinet, adding that in the past he cooperated with Tihomir Oreskovic, who was nominated Prime Minister-Designate last Wednesday.

Asked whether it was good for Croatia, economy-wise, that the future PM Oreskovic was a businessman from financial circles and whether the HNB now expects "to have the wind at its back", Vujcic said that he had met Oreskovic  during the cooperation between the central bank and the pharmaceutical company Pliva at whose helm Oreskovic had been.

"I must wait for the government to be formed and cooperation to start, and now I cannot say anything more," Vujcic said in the interview published on Saturday.

Vujcic reiterated that the HNB was an independent institution under the Croatian laws and must not receive instructions from outside.

However, we are ready to cooperate with everybody, he said.

Considering the possible first moves of the new government to "bring the state budget in order", Vujcic mentioned fiscal consolidation as a requirement to tame the high public debt, and spoke about the importance of boosting Croatia's competitiveness and business climate.

As for 2016, the governor forecast a 1.8% growth in GDP mostly on the back of rising exports.
