Children's ombudswoman responds to culture minister's request

Children's Ombudswoman Ivana Milas Klaric said on Thursday that in her opinion the column by Zrinka Vrabec Mojzes, published in the latest issue of the Nacional weekly, could be violating the rights and interests of the children of Culture Minister Zlatko Hasanbegovic, adding that when writing critically about public figures it was unacceptable to make negative comments about their children.

"We assume that you are familiar with the steps which you can take to protect the rights of your children under the Media Act -- you can demand a public apology or file a civil lawsuit. We also recommend you report the case to the Electronic Media Council and the Journalist Association's Council of Honour over the violation of the rights and interests of your underage children in the said article published in the Nacional weekly," the ombudswoman said in her response to Hasanbegovic.

Minister Hasanbegovic on Wednesday called on the Ombudswoman for Children to protect his underage sons from hate speech in the article by Vrabec Mojzes, published in Nacional.

Hasanbegovic cited parts of the article in which the author asked the future government to pick for the position of new culture minister someone who attended at least one concert and a theatre play, someone who knows that is not polite to chew gum while sitting in the front row at a gala concert together with his wife and children who are also chewing gum.

Hasanbegovic claims that the author of the article diminished the human and civil dignity of his children, asking the ombudswoman to protect his two sons.

The ombudswoman however said her office could not confirm that the said article contained hate speech.
