Commemoration for victims of communism held at Jazovka

A commemoration for victims of communism was held at the Jazovka pit on Zumberak mountain, northwestern Croatia on Wednesday, organised by the Hrvatski Obredni Zdrug Jazovka association and held under the auspices of President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic.

Alongside numerous believers, the commemoration was attended by representatives of the Islamic Community in Croatia and caretaker Culture Minister Zlatan Hasanbegovic, who laid a wreath.

This modern and democratic Croatian state can and should be founded on the Croatian people's right to self-determination, on democratic values and parliamentary democracy, he told reporters.

Those in attendance again warned institutions about the need for lustration and declaring communism, its symbols and exponents, notably Tito, as totalitarian and unacceptable to Croatia.

According to publicly available data, the remains of 447 victims were found in the Jazovka pit, including 270 wounded from Zagreb's Sveti Duh hospital.
