Commissioner: There is risk of weaker absorption capacity when there is no gov't

There is some risk that the capacity for absorbing EU funds is weaker when a member-state has no government, but I cannot say anything for certain, European Commission Vice-President for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness, Jyrki Katainen, said on Friday.

This Finnish EU commissioner and the EU Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, today unveiled a list of transport projects that will receive EUR 6.7 billion under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).

After presenting the selected projects eligible for financing under the CEF transport scheme, Katainen was asked by the press if the latest developments in Croatia, whose government was toppled on Thursday, could affect the pace of the absorption of EU funds.

He admitted that situations when there is no government decelerate public administration performance, which could affect the absorption capacity, but that nothing could be stated with certainty.

The Commissioner called for the stabilisation of the political situation.

EC officials say that Croatia has used up 76% of its national envelope with 12 projects with which it had applied for EU funding and which were approved. Slightly more than EUR 105 million remains available.
