Construction work on bridge linking Croatia, Bosnia at Donji Svilaj begins

Construction work on a bridge spanning the Sava River between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina started on Wednesday with the laying of the foundation stone at Donji Svilaj in Odzak municipality, in Bosnia's northern Posavina region.

The bridge is part of the pan-European road corridor 5C running from Budapest via Osijek to Ploce, southern Croatia.

The 660-metre bridge will cost EUR 22.3 million, not including VAT, and the cost will be covered by Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the two countries relying heavily on EU funds.

Attending the ceremony were Croatian Infrastructure and Transport Minister Oleg Butkovic, Bosnia and Herzegovina Communications and Transport Minister Ismir Jusko, and Bosnia and Herzegovina Prime Minister Denis Zvizdic.

Zvizdic said that the bridge at Donji Svilaj will contribute to the cooperation between the two friendly countries.

"The project also symbolises the very clearly defined priorities the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina has been working on, as has the outgoing Croatian government and as the next government will - and one of them is to raise our relations and cooperation to a higher level and build a prosperous future for the entire region," said Zvizdic.

The bridge at Donji Svilaj will be built by Viadukt and Hering Siroki Brijeg and the deadline for its completion is two years.
