Croatia accuses Slovenia of putting fence on Croatia's territory near Harmica

The Croatian police directorate said on Wednesday that a part of a razor wire fence which Slovenia was erecting along its border with Croatia encroached upon Croatia's territory near the Harmica border crossing and therefore must be removed.

The part of the fence encroaching on Croatia's territory was in the area covered by the Zagreb Police Precinct and Zagreb police chief Goran Burusic on Wednesday afternoon informed the Slovenian police of Croatia's position.

After the negotiations between Burusic and Slovenian officials, Croatia withdrew riot police from the area after having reportedly sent them there to remove the fence. Media reports also indicate that the situation at the border was tense throughout the day, and Slovenia also deployed some 50 riot police along its part of the border.

Earlier on Wednesday, Croatia's Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic said that by deciding to erect a wire fence along its border with Croatia Slovenia was wasting money that might have been spent to build shelters for refugees in transit.

"Erecting a wire fence is a waste of money. It would be more important for (Slovenia) to set up a temporary shelter for refugees with a capacity as that of our shelter (in Slavonski Brod), adapted to the winter conditions," Ostojic said at a news conference in Slavonski Brod.

He insisted that Croatia was complying with all plans, and dismissed Slovenia's explanations that technical barriers were necessary to control a surge of refugees that would ensue after the end of a strike of port workers in Greece.
