Croatia and Bosnia to continue strengthening defence cooperation

Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina will continue to strengthen their defence cooperation so that Bosnia and Herzegovina meets the necessary criteria and joins NATO, Croatian Defence Minister Josip Buljevic and his Bosnian counterpart Marina Pendes said during their meeting in Sarajevo on Monday.

Buljevic was on his first working visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina since becoming Defence Minister. Speaking to the press after meeting with senior Bosnian Defence Ministry officials, he said that all would be done to continue and further promote the successful defence cooperation between the two countries.

"It is in Croatia's strategic interest that Bosnia and Herzegovina joins the EU and NATO family as soon as possible and on that path it will have our full support," Buljevic said, adding that the two countries were neighbours and needed to cooperate as best they could in all areas.

Pendes said that the two countries had excellent cooperation on defence issues, including training, and stressed the importance of the strong support Croatia was providing to Bosnia and Herzegovina on the international level.

"We thank the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Croatia for intensively lobbying over the past few years for the European and Euro-Atlantic integration of Bosnia and Herzegovina," she said.

Pendes said that there was also full agreement about the importance of strengthening regional cooperation, especially with Montenegro and Serbia.
