Croatia, Austria discuss closer cooperation in Hypo Bank corruption scandal

Croatian Justice Minister Ante Sprlje and a member of an Austrian parliamentary commission of inquiry in charge of a corruption scandal involving Hypo Alpe Adria Bank, Rainer Hable, discussed in Zagreb on Friday the need to strengthen the cooperation between the two countries in uncovering and prosecuting wrongdoing in that case, which involves persons from Croatia, notably Istria and Zagreb, Sprlje's office said in a statement.

The two officials agreed on the need to strengthen cross-border cooperation and eliminate any political or other influence on the investigation in the case.

Hable said that he was worried that the tracking of money flows was difficult and that the investigation into the Hypo Bank scandal was not yielding desired results, notably with regard to the confiscation of illegally gained property.

Sprlje said that Croatia would cooperate with the aim of uncovering all illegal activities related to the case, expressing his wish for the Austrian judiciary as well as the Austrian parliamentary commission to share the findings of their investigations with the relevant Croatian institutions so as to facilitate the prevention of cross-border fraud.

He said that Croatia welcomed a more active approach of the Austrian judiciary in all cases possibly related to Croatia.
