Croatia Can Do Better initiative calls for education minister's resignation

An group of citizens going under the name Croatia Can Do Better on Monday called for the resignation of Minister of Science, Education and Sports Predrag Sustar if he does not change his policy toward a curriculum reform and called on citizens to show their support for the reform at protest rallies on June 1.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Nikola Baketa told a press conference that the expert working group and all those who had been involved in the reform had used their expertise, experience, know-how and skills to shape a school system that can respond to future demands, while in return they experienced political attacks and pressure.

"We demand that parliament adopts a resolution according to which education and the education reform are proclaimed a priority. We call for the political responsibility of Minister of Science, Education and Sports Predrag Sustar and demand his resignation. We call on the parliamentary Committee on Education, Science and Culture to reconsider its decision to add new experts to the expert working group in an undefined way, bypassing procedure," Baketa said.

Another member of the group, Eli Pijaca Plavsic, said that education was a matter of the future and that simultaneous protest rallies would be held on Global Day of Parents, June 1, in 12 cities in Croatia as well as London, Brussels, Berlin and Shanghai and that they expected at least 10,000 people at the rally in Zagreb.

This civil society organisations making up the group called on citizens to attend the rallies set for June 1 at 6 pm to "clearly and loudly say that education is a priority for Croatian society."
