Croatia to mark 100th anniversary of recognition of Islam

The Mayor of Zagreb, Milan Bandic, on Friday received a delegation of the Islamic Community in Croatia, led by Zagreb Mufti Aziz Hasanovic, to discuss preparations for the centennial jubilee of the recognition of Islam in Croatia as an official religion.

Various events will be held in areas of Croatia with sizeable Muslim communities to mark this anniversary and Zagreb will be the venue of a tolerance concert that will be held in the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall on 22 April.

On 27 April, the Croatian parliament will hold a special ceremony to commemorate 27 April 1917 when Croatian lawmakers declared Islam as an officially recognised religion in the country.

An exhibition of works by Muslim artists will be staged in the Mimara museum.

Zagreb will host a conference of representatives of 50 Muslim communities in Europe, according to Mufti Hasanovic.

Mufti Hasanovic said that they were proud of this jubilee and of being able to confirm Croatia's multiculturalism and high standards in respecting religious and minority rights.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Muslim community to being a constructive factor in Croatian society, noting that the treatment of the Muslim community in Croatia remained the same regardless of recent negative developments in Europe.
