Croatian Air Force display team wins award at RIAT airshow in UK

The Croatian Air Force and Air Defence (HRZ PZO) display team "Wings of Storm" has won the King Hussein Memorial Sword award for the overall best performance at the world's largest military airshow, the Royal International Air Tatoo (RIAT), at Fairford airbase in the United Kingdom, where it demonstrated its flying skills on July 9 and 10, the Croatian Ministry of Defence said on Monday.

The King Hussein Memorial Sword is the most prestigious of the six awards traditionally presented there. It is awarded in honour of King Hussein of Jordan, a long-time patron of this event, and the award was presented by his son, Prince Faisal bin Hussein.

Croatia was the 56th country to take part in this prestigious event since it was first staged in 1971, the ministry said.

The airshow attracted a crowd of 153,000 people, including members of the British royal family and 36 Air Force commanders from around the world.  A total of 230 aircraft from 24 Air Forces took part in the show and the flying programme featured the first ever international display by Lockheed Martin's F-35B Lightning II fighter jet.
