Croatian bishops concerned about problems in gov't functioning

Croatian bishops express their deep concern about current problems in the democratic functioning of the government, bishops said at an extraordinary session of the Croatian Bishops' Conference (HBK) on Thursday.

"It is painful to witness actions that are void of responsibility and care for the values that are in the foundations of the free Croatian state and for which Croatian defenders sacrificed so much," the HBK said in a statement, noting that the sacrifice it was referring to should be remembered particularly now that the country was marking the 25th anniversary of its statehood.

The bishops believe that it would be fatal to allow current divisions to deepen due to narrow political interests and call in their statement on believers to pray for the judiciousness of political stake-holders and the well-being of the Croatian people and state.
