Croatian Democratic Union submits slates for Sept 11 polls

About 100 slates for 11 constituencies and about 20 for the 12th, in which national minority deputies are elected, were submitted to the State Election Commission by noon on Saturday.

The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) submitted its lists of candidates this morning, with president Andrej Plenkovic dismissing claims that they had caused a revolt in some party branches. He said the process of agreeing the candidates had been very transparent and that the slates included candidates from the HDZ's partners. He said the key message was restoring the HDZ's credibility.

Responding to questions from the press, Plenkovic confirmed that candidates from the Hrast party were on the HDZ's slates in two constituencies, although the slates do not state that they are Hrast members. He denied that voters were being cheated, saying that "it's a political agreement" and that the two parties had many things in common.

Plenkovic went on to say that he was pleased with last night's debate with Social Democratic Party president Zoran Milanovic on Croatian Television, adding that "it's good for raising the democratic culture and the standard of dialogue in a democratic Croatia."

He said the HDZ would formally present its platform on Wednesday and that it would focus on the economy, competition, job creation, a demographic revival and social equity.
