Croatian FM: Few interested in EU enlargement

Croatian Foreign Minister Miro Kovac said on Monday in Luxembourg, where he arrived for an EU ministerial conference, that the European Union's enlargement seemed to be interesting to few, and that there had been no mention of the bloc's negotiations with Serbia, an EU hopeful.

Asked by the press whether any of his counterparts from EU members asked him about Zagreb's position on enabling Serbia to open the policy chapter on the judiciary in the EU accession negotiations, Kovac answered in the negative.

"I must disappoint you. This has not been a topic today at all. Generally speaking, few in the EU are interested in the enlargement, except we in Croatia and several neighbours," Kovac said.

In order to greenlight the opening of Policy Chapter No. 23, Croatia insists that Serbia rescind regional jurisdiction in the prosecution of war crimes committed during and after the collapse of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, enable ethnic Croats to exercise minority rights, and fully cooperate with the UN tribunal for war crimes committed in the area of the former Yugoslavia.

Minister Kovac said he hoped that after the April 24 elections, Serbia would get a government that would keep the country "on a pro-European course and fulfil the set criteria."
