Croatian MEP on Brexit: Bad day for EU

A Croatian member of the European Parliament, Ivan Jakovcic of the Istrian Democratic Party (IDS) said on Friday that Britain's referendum decision to leave the European Union was a bad day for the EU and that it would have great consequences for the functioning and for relations among member states, Jakovcic's office said in a press release.

"Today is a bad day for the European Union, There is no doubt that Britain's leaving would have great consequences for the functioning of the European Union and for relations among the member states. Many member states will face problems. There are already announcements of similar referenda in France and the Netherlands, advocated by far right parties," Jakovcic said.

"However, I am not confident that this is the best day for the United Kingdom either. Scotland and Northern Ireland are announcing referenda on leaving the UK," he added.

"Clearly, voters in Great Britain were divided both in territorial and generational terms. A majority of young people, namely 75%, voted in favour of Britain's remaining the the EU. And this indicates how complex this referendum is. The only thing that is certain is that nothing will stay the way it was," Jakovcic said adding that European unity had no alternative.
