Croatian MEP expresses concern to EC over Russia/Serbia military exercise at border

Concerned with a joint military exercise to be conducted by Russia and Serbia just 30 kilometres from the border to Croatia, MEP Marijana Petir asked the European Commission for its opinion in that regard, Petir's office reported on Thursday.

In the press release its says that Russia will participate in two Serbian military exercises just 30 kilometres from the Croatian, that is, European Union border.

Petir says that concern exists in Croatia due to the announced military exercise scheduled for September adding that Serbia on the one hand does not want to joint NATO yet it wishes to become a member of the European Union.

"The level of Russia's influence on Serbia is increasing and it should be clear to Serbia that it cannot become a member of the EU like that," Petir said.

She underscored that Croatia is interested in Serbia's European path, however Serbia has to be aware that with this sort of Russian military influence it will not manage to complete negotiations of Chapter 31 -  "Foreign Security and Defence Policy" and that it has to adapt its strategy to joint activities with other EU member states, the press release says.
