Croatian minister: Slovenia wasting money on border fence

Croatia's Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic believes that by deciding to erect a wire fence along its border with Croatia Slovenia is squandering money that might have been spent to build shelters for refugees in transit.

"Erecting a wire fence is a waste of money. It would be more important for (Slovenia) to set up a temporary shelter for refugees with a capacity as that of our shelter (in Slavonski Brod), adapted to the winter conditions," Ostojic said at a news conference in Slavonski Brod on Wednesday.

He insisted that Croatia was complying with all plans, and dismissed Slovenia's explanations that technical barriers were necessary to control a surge of refugees that would ensue after the end of a strike of port workers in Greece.

Ostojic also called for scheduling a new conference of ministers from the countries along the migrant route, describing video-conferences as inefficient.

"Our capacity is to accommodate 5,000 people. If it were so in Serbia, Hungary, Macedonia, Slovenia, Austria and Bulgaria, any refugee tide could be held under control," the minister said.

He provided updated figures showing that 358,506 refugees have passed through Croatia since the crisis spilled over to Croatia in mid-September.

Slovenia's army started putting up a razor fence along some parts of the frontier with Croatia on Wednesday morning.
