Croatian NGO calls on EP to condemn surogacy as form of human trafficking

The Croatian non-governmental organisation In the Name of the Family has called on the European Parliament's Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality to vote in favour of the amendments that condemn surogacy as a modern form of trafficking in human beings.

"Surogacy is a modern form of trafficking in human beings, mothers and children, and should therefore be prohibited in all its forms," the NGO said in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement was issued ahead of a vote on a draft report on the implementation of the Directive on preventing and combating trafficking in human beings and protecting its victims. In the Name of the Family called on the members of the Committee to vote, regardless of their party affiliation, in favour of four amendments that condemn the practice of surogacy as trafficking in mothers and children.

The NGO recalls that a European Parliament resolution of December 2015 condemns the practice of surrogacy, "which undermines the human dignity of the woman since her body and its reproductive functions are used as a commodity."

It says that women are subjected to specific forms of reproductive exploitation, including forced marriage, forced adoption, prostitution, surogacy and female genital mutilation, and calls on the European Commission to include gestational surogacy among forms of human trafficking.
