Croatian parties seal deal, bringing new government one step closer

Croatia was a step away from a new government on Friday, with two key parties saying they have reached a coalition agreement, nearly a month after September 11 snap polls.

The conservative Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and newcomer reformist Most party said their alliance, including several other lawmakers, will control more than 90 of the 151 seats in parliament.

HDZ and Most also headed the previous government, which lasted less than half a year before collapsing in June.

The reforging of their alliance was made possible by the resignation of the former HDZ leader Tomislav Karamarko, who was surrounded by corruption allegations.

The new HDZ chief, Andrej Plenkovic, appears set to become the new prime minister. The new parliament is scheduled to hold a constitutive session on October 14.
