Croatian PM meets with US vice-president

Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic met with US Vice-President Joe Biden in Zagreb on Wednesday.

The main subject of their meeting was the current situation in the Middle East, notably the war in Syria, a government press release said. Also discussed was the refugee crisis faced by Europe and the security situation in the world following the latest terrorist attacks and threats.

Biden had arrived in Zagreb to attend the Brdo-Brijuni Presidential Process summit as a guest. The meeting brought together the leaders of Southeast European countries.

Biden said on arrival that the region of Southeast Europe had been very important to the United States in the last 25 years. He added that the regional initiative the Brdo-Brijuni Process was doing a good job because it managed to bring regional leaders together in dialogue

The US vice-president's attendance at the summit is seen by senior Croatian officials as a confirmation of the importance the US attaches to the region of Southeast Europe.

The meeting between Milanovic and Biden was also attended by Croatia's First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Vesna Pusic, Croatian Ambassador to the United States Josip Paro, US National Security Adviser Colin Kahl and US Ambassador to Croatia Julieta Valls Noyes.
