Croatian president extends condolences to French counterpart

Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic on Saturday extended her condolences to French President Francois Hollande and the people of France following terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday night.

Grabar-Kitarovic lit a candle, laid flowers and signed a book of condolence at the French Embassy in Zagreb, the President's Office said.

"I am deeply shaken by the news of terrorist attacks that occurred in Paris and of a large number of casualties. Please accept my deepest condolences on behalf of the citizens of the Republic of Croatia and my own," the Croatian president said in her message.

Grabar-Kitarovic said that Croatia and she personally strongly condemn this "senseless crime of terrorism in Paris and in these moments of national mourning we express our sincere sympathy and solidarity with the families of the victims and the entire French people."

This terrorist attack must not cause us to waver in building a world based on democratic values or in respecting differences, she said, stressing the importance of closer cooperation in "fighting against those who do not accept such a world."

"The values of Islam are quintessentially peaceful and encourage respect for others and those who are different. Terrorist acts like those in Paris run against this and must not be responded to with small-mindedness or intolerance, which is the terrorists' ultimate goal," Grabar-Kitarovic said in her message.
