Croatian Prime Minister Oreskovic set to fall in Thursday vote

Croatian Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic is set to fall with his cabinet just six months into his term in a no-confidence motion Thursday, with the two largest parties against him.

"If the no-confidence motion is to lead to the departure of this government, then we're in. We'll vote against him [Oreskovic]," the leader of the opposition Social Democrats Zoran Milanovic said.

"Early elections are our goal," Milanovic said after a meeting of the party leadership Wednesday afternoon.

The key partner in the governing coalition, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), revoked its support for non-partisan Oreskovic already on June 3 and launched the no-confidence vote on June 7.

HDZ revoked its support for Oreskovic after he called its leader and Deputy Premier Tomislav Karamarko to resign over corruption allegations coming from coalition partners.

The HDZ seeks to avert elections just six months after Oreskovic took over and is trying to muster a new majority and nominate Finance Minister Zdravko Maric as the new premier.

HDZ's chances to avoid snap polls took another blow on Wednesday when an anti-corruption watchdog ruled that Karamarko violated rules by lobbying for a Hungarian petrol company in a contract dispute with Croatia.
