Croatian, Slovenian presidents have different views on border arbitration

Slovenia and Croatia on Friday again showed entirely different views on border arbitration, with Slovenian President Borut Pahor saying in Varazdin that the Permanent Court of Arbitration should continue the process, while Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic said that a unilateral decision could cause incidents.

"In practice there are no problems. The navigation in Savudrija Bay proceeds to the benefit of citizens, there are no incidents. I'm afraid that a unilateral court decision could bring problems and incidents," Grabar-Kitarovic told reporters.

Pahor said the court should continue the arbitration process and hand down a decision, and reminded Croatian citizens and politicians that solving the border dispute through arbitration had been part of a referendum at which Slovenia agreed to Croatia's European Union accession.

"A majority of Slovenians were for inviting Croatia to the EU, for the court to solve the border (issue). Those in Croatia deciding on the fate of the (arbitration) agreement should bear that circumstance in mind," Pahor told the press.

The two presidents were in the northern Croatian town of Varazdin at a trilateral meeting together with Austrian President Heinz Fischer.
