Croatian Women's Network: Advancing women means advancing economies

The Toronto-based Croatian Women's Network organised an international conference in Zagreb on Tuesday, "Advancing Women, Advancing Economies

Among the nominees were women from Croatia and women of Croatian descent from Australia, Canada, the United States, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom, said Network founder and Canadian representative Caroline Spivak.

The Croatian Women's Network is a platform helping the advancement and empowerment of women and the idea to found it came from the need to gather women in Croatia and those living in the rest of the world, Spivak said, adding that through their business engagement and successes they represented a big potential for the countries in which they lived, including Croatia.

Australian Ambassador to Croatia Susan Cox spoke of women's role in advancing economies, saying their representation in Australian business was 34% but that not long ago, in the 1980s, women could not take a loan. She said the situation was changing in women's favour by the day, as evidenced by the fact that there was 40% of women in Australian diplomacy.

Croatia is a patriarchal society and there is a regression, as seen in the smaller number of female members of parliament despite legal requirements, said Mirela Holy, former leader of the ORaH party and now a lecturer at the VERN school. She added that she would like women to have all days of the year, not just one.
