Croatians spend EUR 6b on Visa cards in 2015

About EUR 6 billion or HRK 45 billion was spent on Visa credit cards in Croatia in 2015, up 22 percent on the year, it was said on Tuesday at a presentation of the company's business results.

Visa Europe regional manager Davor Krsul said the spending also referred to online and POS transactions as well as cash withdrawals from ATMs. In 2015, the number of Visa cards issued in Croatia increased 12% on the year, with Croatians owning 4.66 million cards, or more than one per capita, he added.

Krsul said cash payments remained the main competition to credit card payments and that globally 70% of all payments were made in cash. He said he was satisfied with a 61% increase in e-commerce, adding that 50% of transactions were made on domestic and 50% on foreign web sites.

Krsul said Visa put the first virtual debit card on the market and that it was promoting the importance of financial literacy.

Visa's general manager for Croatia, Malta, Romania and Slovenia, Catalin Cretu, said that in 2015 Visa Europe posted record profits of EUR 2.31 billion, up 25% on the year.
