Croats rank high among pet owners

Over half of the global population (56%) have at least one pet, and pet owners dominate in Latin America, Russia and the USA. Croatians are also deemed to be pet lovers given that 61% of households possess at least one pet, according to an online survey of over 27,000 people across 22 countries, conducted by the GfK pollster.

According to the global study on pet ownership, Argentina, Mexico and Brazil have the highest percentage of pet-owners, followed by Russia and the USA, reads a GfK press release.

Asian countries appear to have the smallest percentage of their online population who own pets.

As for Croatia, dogs are the most preferred pet animal, accounting for 41% of pet possessions, followed by cats (29%).

Broken down by geographical areas, as many as 76% of inhabitants in the north of Croatia have a pet, while in the south (Dalmatia), 46% cater for pets.

Overall, dogs are the most popular pet among the respondents of this online survey.

"A third of the online population across all 22 countries reports having a dog, compared to just under a quarter (23 percent) who have a cat."

"Only 12 percent overall keep pet fish and six percent have a pet bird," according to the press release.

Dogs are the most dominant pet type also in Argentina (66%) and Mexico (64%).

On the other hand, bird owners are most prevalent in Turkey, "where one in five (20 percent) keep a pet bird."
