Current county system should be retained and rationalised, says President

President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic said in the northern Croatian town of Cakovec on Friday that the current system of counties should be retained but that their work should be rationalised, announcing that she would conduct a meeting in her office with all county prefects to discuss the county system and to encourage the exchange of positive experiences.

"Rationalising the work of counties can show that they are very functional," Grabar-Kitarovic said during a visit on the occasion of Medjimurje County Day. She said that the county functioned well and managed development projects well using European Union funds.

"The result is that negative demographic trends in Croatia are being reversed in Medjimurje," she underscored.

The President emphasised that the county had a rich history and was turned to the future, expressing her delight with the rationalisation of the public administration system, with county authorities comprising representatives of all the major political parties in Croatia.

"You are showing that together we can function well when we leave ideological differences aside and when we concentrate on vital, namely development issues," she said and added that this was a true example of the togetherness she was constantly talking about.

Medjimurje County Prefect Matija Posavec of the Croatian People's Party (HNS) stressed that people in that region were not burdened with the past. "We don't ask where anyone was in 1941 or 1971 but do our job," he said.

The President laid a wreath and lit a candle at a monument to all killed and missing veterans in Cakovec.
