Curriculum reform initiative slams outgoing education minister

The civil society organisations and Croatian Teachers Union making up the "Croatia Can Do Better" Initiative on Thursday condemned in strong terms and assessed as irregular the announcement by caretaker Education Minister Predrag Sustar that he would appoint a new task force for a public debate on the integral curriculum reform.

The Initiative said in a press release that the caretaker government was not authorised to appoint new members to groups and working bodies with long term impact on Croatia, let alone Sustar, who obstructed the integral curriculum reform and would now additionally damage it by appointing people by disregarding the Science and Education Strategy.

The Initiative reminded the caretaker government and Sustar that 50,000 citizens, together with civil society organisations and unions, recently protested to say that they want education to be a national priority and that education reforms should be based on expertise and transparency, and not politicking and interest.

The Initiative said that during the upcoming election campaign it would request that those running for office stress the importance of the education reform and present plans to continue with the integral curriculum reform as planned and with the same team.

Sustar said on Monday that a new body would be appointed soon to coordinate a public debate on the integral curriculum reform, reiterating that the reform would continue. He added that such appointments were in the remit of a caretaker government.
