Defence lawyer says will appeal ruling against Perkovic, prosecution satisfied

The attorney for Josip Perkovic, Anto Nobilo, said on Wednesday he would appeal a life sentences handed down to his client, while the prosecutors in the case underscored they were entirely satisfied with the ruling.

The Higher Regional Court in Munich on Wednesday found Yugoslav-era Croatian intelligence officials Josip Perkovic and Zdravko Mustac guilty of the murder of Croatian dissident Stjepan Djurekovic near Munich in 1983 and sentenced them to life in prison.

Nobilo underlined that the defence was dissatisfied.

"We will start consultations today already in order to request revision as soon as possible. We believe that this is an unfair ruling which is not based on facts. We believe that at critical moments, the court skipped explanations and cited some of the positions stated by the prosecution," Nobilo told Hina.

Attorneys for Stjepan Djurekovic's widow Gizele Djurekovic, said they were satisfied with the ruling adding that the judgement would find response in Croatia.

"The judgement will have to have consequences in Croatia as well. What we were interested the most in was to find out the truth about how the system functioned. Now we know that truth and it is time for the truth to shed light on that part of Croatia's history," said one of the lawyers for Djurekovic's widow.

The prosecutor's office is also satisfied. State attorney Leionhard Weiss announced a possibility for Perkovic and Mustac to serve their term in Croatia, once the verdict becomes final.
