Drinking water is a strategic interest, hears conference

Drinking water is a strategic interest at the national and global levels and careful protection and monitoring of that resource is a guarantee for future generations, a conference of the Economic Interest Association of Refreshment Producers (GIUPP) heard on Tuesday on the occasion of World Water Day, observed on March 22.

GIUPP director Jasna Cacic said it is necessary to raise awareness of Croatia's water wealth and to underline the importance of a responsible attitude to water resources and her opinion was confirmed by Assistant Agriculture Minister Elizabeta Kos.

It is important to maintain the good state of water, secure sufficient quantities of drinking water and not just for personal use but for other commercial needs that can facilitate further development of the water industry, Kos said.

According to UNESCO research, Croatia has 32,818 cubic meters of renewable drinking water per capita at its disposal per year. As for the wealth and availability of water resources, Croatia is ranked 5th in Europe and 42nd in the world.

Cacic advised that water production in Croatia was constantly growing, however, that growth oscillates. In 2015 a total of 374 million litres was produced, which is 8% more than the year before.

Of that, 52% or 913 million litres accounts for natural mineral water while 48% or 181 milion litres relates to natural spring water.
