The European Commission on Friday asked Croatia to align its waste management legislation with that of the European Union.
The Commission sent a reasoned opinion to Zagreb, giving it two months to notify the Commission of the measures it has taken to remove the shortcomings identified. Otherwise, the Commission may approach the European Court of Justice.
After identifying a number of shortcomings in the transposition of the Waste Management Framework Directive, the Commission sent an official notice to the Croatian authorities last October, which was the first step in launching the procedure for violating the acquis communautaire.
The aim of the Waste Management Directive is to increase waste recycling and recovery as a contribution to a circular economy.
