Economy minister denies he was fired for theft

Economy Minister Tomislav Panenic rejected allegations made by union leader Ozren Matijasevic during a meeting with Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic on Friday that Panenic had been fired from the Baumax company due to theft.

"I would never have jeopardised such a responsible position as the deputy head of Baumax, especially not to steal Styrofoam worth a few hundred kuna. It is also an absolute lie that I was fired," Panenic said in a statement.

He added that he his contract was cancelled consensually, but he was not allowed to speak about any details in this regard because the contract with the Baumax Zagreb company obliges him to confidentiality.

"Big and important steps are awaiting me in the economy ministry that I consider to be of much greater interest to the public than ill-intentioned untruths that we have read in the media," Panenic said.

After the meeting with the PM, Matijasevic said that he "opened the situation concerning Economy Minister Tomislav Panenic, based on information that he was fired due to theft at one of his previous jobs." I expect a properly supported retraction, however, if this is true, then Panenic does not possess the necessary credibility to resolve problems, Matijasevic said.
