Environment Pollutant Register twinning project launched

The twinning project "Improvement of Croatian Environment Pollutant Register and its Integration into Croatian Environmental Information System", valued at 900,000 euro, 95% of which is financed by the EU, commenced on Tuesday and will continue over the next 18 months.

At the official launch of the project in the Europe House in Zagreb it was heard that the pollutant register would be improved with the development of a web site that would facilitate access to information for the industrial sector, relevant institutions and bodies and the professional community and wider public. This will also satisfy the requirement of compulsory reporting, particularly to the European Union and United Nations, as well as ensure that the public and decision-makers have access to quality information.

Experts will update the National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory for those obliged to submit data in Croatia and make recommendations on how to strengthen the capacity of the Croatian Environment Agency (CEA) and other relevant bodies regarding reporting to the European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register.

The project envisages educational workshops to improve the quality of reporting on pollutants and facilitate access to web applications for environment protection in Croatia.

The project is conducted by the Croatian Environment Agency in cooperation with the Austrian Environment Agency and with the support of experts from Austria, Germany and France.

The head of the Croatian Environment Agency's department to monitor sector pressure, Andrina Crnjak Thavenet, underscored that the register was primarily there to serve the public. If citizens wish to see if pollution exists in their surroundings, they can obtain this information on the agency's web site. The latest project will upgrade data that has existed since 2008 with the aim of providing better information and making it more accessible, she said.
