EP discusses report on EU strategy for Adriatic-Ionian region

Members of the European Parliament discussed in Strasbourg on Tuesday a report on the European Union's strategy for the Adriatic-Ionian region compiled by the rapporteur on the issue, Croatian MEP Ivan Jakovcic.

MEPs are expected to adopt the report as an EP resolution on Wednesday.

The Adriatic-Ionian Macroregion is the third such region after the Baltic and the Danube macroregion. It comprises for EU member states - Croatia, Slovenia, Italy and Greece - and four neighbours - Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Albania. Together they have a population of about 70 million.

The report underlines the need to complete the Adriatic-Ionian motorway and connect the region with the main European transport corridors, calls for better connections between the islands and the mainland, underlines the importance of building an LNG terminal and using renewables. Jakovic also proposes measures to protect and preserve fish stock and a shipbuilding development aid programme.

The strategy rests on four pillars - encouraging the maritime economy, developing transport and energy ties, protecting the environment, and developing sustainable tourism.

Croatian MEP Dubravka Suica compiled the opinion of the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs on the strategy, highlighting the building of a road and rail infrastructure, including the Adriatic-Ionian motorway and the Peljesac bridge.
