European People's Party for European solution to migrant crisis

It is necessary to reach a joint European solution to the migrant crisis in parallel to stronger and focused engagement of the European Union in Syria and neighbouring countries, Croatia's Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miro Kovac said at a seminar of the European People's Party foreign ministers in Vienna on Sunday.

"We want to have a joint European solution to the migrant crisis. We must help Greece, cooperate with Turkey and we can solve the issue of migrants and refugees from the Middle East in the medium and long term by stronger and focused engagement of the EU in Syria and neighbouring countries," Kovac told Hina.

The minister said that over 600,000 migrants had passed through Croatia, one of the countries on the Balkan migrant route.

"We are are proud of the establishment of coordination with Slovenia, Serbia and Macedonia, as it has contributed to the reduction of the influx of refugees and migrants into the EU."

Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz believes that it is necessary to hold talks with the countries from which the highest number of refugees are coming as well as with countries through which migrants pass in transit, and with Eastern Partnership countries so as to curb uncontrolled illegal entries of migrants into the EU.

We have closed the Balkan route, and we will try to reach a similar deal with Italy, the Austrian minister said.
