Ex-minister says time will tell if HDZ nominee is good choice for post

Former Veterans' Affairs Minister Predrag Matic (SDP) on Tuesday did not wish to say whether the nomination of Miljan Brkic (HDZ) was a good option for that post but he did accuse the Croatian Democratic Union, the party that nominated Brkic, of being inconsistent.

"Time will tell whether Brkic is a good choice," Matic told reporters in parliament. He accused the HDZ of being inconsistent and questioned why they had turned the entire process into such a saga.

"Let's recall that they said that they had hundreds of quality candidates. Brkic said that there was no way he would take over the ministry, that he is a secretary, and operational person...and now, we have to conclude that they could not find a candidate," he said and added, that he didn't think it took too much to convince Brkic to take on that post, Matic said.

He claimed that veterans found anyone to be a good choice for the minister as long as the candidate wasn't from SDP. Matic 'admitted' that Brkic's war service is unquestionable however "there are other things that are now being disclosed."

Matic did not answer whether he expected the protest organised outside the ministry to end with Brkic's appointment, particularly since protesting veterans have said they support Brkic.

He added that he didn't care how long the protest tent would remain outside the ministry but that he would like to know why they were protesting, which he did not manage to find out in a year and half.
