Ex-Yugoslav secret agent Vinko Sindicic arrested in Spain

Former Yugoslav secret service agent Vinko Sindicic has been arrested in Spain on a Croatian warrant, a judge presiding over the trial of two Yugoslav-era Croatian intelligence officials in Munich said on Tuesday.

"The Bavarian State Office of Criminal Investigation has been notified that Vinko Sindicic has been arrested in Burgos, Spain," Presiding Judge Manfred Dauster said at the start of the 71st hearing in the trial of Josip Perkovic and Zdravko Mustac, who are charged with complicity in the murder of Croatian emigre Stjepan Djurekovic in Wolfratshausen, outside Munich, in 1983.

Sindicic has been summoned several times to testify in the trial but never appeared. He was a key witness in the 2008 trial of former Yugoslav secret police (UDBA) informer Krunoslav Prates, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the murder of Djurekovic.

Sindicic was arrested in Spain on an international warrant issued by Croatia. The defence team representing Perkovic has pressed charges against Sindicic in Croatia for giving false testimony in the Prates trial. Sindicic was arrested on those charges.

It is not known for now whether Sindicic will testify in the Perkovic and Mustac trial.

Sindicic served 15 years in prison for the attempted murder of Croatian emigre Nikola Stedul in Scotland in 1988. He was also on trial in Zagreb for the murder of Croatian emigre Bruno Busic in 1978, but was acquitted in 2000.
