Farm minister pledges better use of arable land, irrigation

Croatian Agriculture Minister Davor Romic is sure that the government's programme will create opportunities for agricultural producers.

Opening an international conference at the Agriculture Faculty in Osijek on Thursday, Minister Romic recalled that currently over 650,000 hectares of arable land was unused.

Putting this land into use will be one of the challenges of this government, Romic said.

The other main target is irrigation, the minister added.

Romic went on to say that innovations, research and new technologies in agricultural production were the pillars of modern European agriculture. The minister promised higher engagement of researchers in the elaboration of a strategy for the development of the national agricultural sector.
