FinMin: Government's main responsibility is revenues side of budget

Finance Minister Zdravko Maric said at a conference organised by the Association of Croatian Exporters, called "Economic Situation in Croatia and Expectations for 2016", that he was aware that he was being identified with the budget and that his main responsibility was to see to the revenues side of the budget.

"You are right to have great expectations of the government, but I too have certain expectations of you and of the entire economy, together to make certain progress and to join efforts to help set Croatia and its economy on the path of recovery and then growth," Maric said at the conference.

He underscored that after a 12% cumulative decrease of GDP over the past six years, growth is more than welcome, even a 2% growth. However, in medium terms, nobody should be happy with a 2% growth, he stressed.

Maric told exporters that a large portion of the success of the government and the entire economy depended on Croatia's exporters. The government will continue to support the Croatian Bank for Reconstruction and Development (HBOR) which has favourable loan programmes for exporters.

Through the announced measures -- fiscal consolidation, stabilisation of public debt, removal of administrative barriers - the state will facilitate business operations, Maric said, adding that the government was also considering some tax breaks.

The minister reiterated that taxes would not be changed this year. "We have to send out a very clear message about the stability of the tax system," Maric said, adding that it was difficult to speculate when entrepreneurs could expect tax breaks.

The minister also reiterated that the government was scheduled to discuss the budget next week.

The head of the State Property Management Office, Tomislav Boban, said at the conference that the contract for the Kupari tourist project should be signed by the end of March, adding that plans for ten other investments have been prepared and sent to Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic.
