Five NGOs against deploying army to manage migrant crisis

Five non-governmental organisations on Wednesday expressed dissatisfaction with announcements by some Croatian office-holders that they are considering the deployment of army troops at the country's border in an attempt to improve refugee crisis management.

The civil society associations say that refugees are heading towards Europe seeking shelter, and Croatia's moral obligation is to do all it can to ensure that humanitarian accommodation is provided to those people fleeing war.

They also regard the deployment of army troops at the border to manage the refugee flow as a move steering society towards militarisation, which they say is in contravention of the Constitution.

During his visit to Germany on Tuesday, Croatian Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic said Zagreb "is looking into ways to protect the Croatian border and, should it be necessary, to send the army to help police manage the refugee flow more humanely", adding that the problem needed to be resolved at its root, namely at the Turkish-Greek border.

Interior Minister Vlaho Orepic also said that the possibility of deploying army troops along the border was being considered.
