Foreign media: Key Croatia coalition party moves to topple Prime Minister Oreskovic

The key partner in Croatia's governing coalition will launch a motion to topple Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic, its leader said Tuesday.

"The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) begins the procedure to remove Prime Minister Oreskovic," party leader Tomislav Karamarko told a press conference in Zagreb.

With that Karamarko, a deputy premier, countered Oreskovic's demand on Friday for his resignation, just six months after the cabinet was formed following elections in November.

"Croatia has neither the time, nor patience for that. It needs a firm, united government to carry out reforms and reach goals," Karamarko said.

"With this shock, we want to create something positive, to wake some people up," he added.

The government, headed by the non-partisan Oreskovic, has been formed by bickering partners HDZ and the reformist newcomer party, Most (Bridge).

Oreskovic said last week that the feuding between his deputies - HDZ's Karamarko and Most's Bozo Petrov - prevented the cabinet from functioning.

Petrov was the first to call for Karamarko's ouster over corruption allegations.

Karamarko said his party will seek to form the new cabinet within the existing parliament, without going to early elections.

Oreskovic is a political novice who had worked as an international pharmaceutical industry executive before being invited to head the cabinet.

The main opposition party, former prime minister Zoran Milanovic's Social Democrats, has already indicated that it will also vote against Oreskovic.

The HDZ has 59 of the 151 seats in parliament and Social Democrats have 55.
