German and Swiss press: Croatian govt has practically toppled

German and Swiss press on Monday reported that the current Croatian government had practically toppled, and they generally pointed an accusing finger to Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader and First Deputy PM Tomislav Karamarko.

"Tomislav Karamarko has abruptly put an end to a political experiment, the success of which has been doubtful for some time," the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported on Monday.

The German daily recalls that the government led by PM Tihomir Oreskovic had been set up after long consultations and changes inside the Bridge Party.

The Berliner Zeitung quoted analyst Norbert Mappes-Niediek as criticising the HDZ for being "steeped in corruption" and in parallel covered by national colours. "Currently in east Europe this is a rather safe concept for success." he wrote adding that there was no time for relaxation regardless of the fact that this concept has not worked in Croatia.

The Swiss "Neue Zuericher Zeitung" wrote that a five-month experiment of the government with Tihomir Oreskovic at its helm had failed, and the newspaper claims that the main cause for the rift in the government is Tomislav Karamarko and the involvement of his family in business operations relating to INA and MOL.
