Govt. set to cut unemployment below 14%, raise GDP to 3 pct

There are three key government goals, to reduce unemployment to below 14 percent, to increase annual GDP growth to 3% and to try not to rely exclusively on big government investments, Entrepreneurship and Crafts Minister Darko Horvat said on Thursday.

"A large majority of our companies and businesses, primarily start-ups, happen out of necessity and not an entrepreneurial idea. Big companies experience either pre-bankruptcy or bankruptcy processes, fall apart, disappear. All the staff of big companies, the management, look for a second chance. Soon, through the budget and the Enterprise Impulse, we will try to show everyone not to see a second chance as a grey area but as a second opportunity. Because in the West too many start-ups go under before turning into a serious business," Horvat said at Lider magazine's 7th conference on the future of family-run companies.

He said the government would outline economic and fiscal policy guidelines next week.

He said that Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic had been trying for three weeks now to deal with administrative obstacles and create a partnership between the state administration and entrepreneurs. "Oreskovic knows who creates new value and fills the budget and the expenditure side," he said, adding that entrepreneurs must finally come into focus.

Horvat said that next week he would meet with economic representatives of Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Speaking of family-run companies, he said that smart owners, once their companies grew sufficiently, left the running of the companies to professional managers. "Managing to get by in Croatian enterprise today is a real art, skill and virtue."
