Gov't: Unions not ready to deal with important issues through dialogue

The government expressed regret on Tuesday over the decision by seven public-sector unions not to attend a meeting on the agreement to increase the basic salary in public and state services, saying that the unions were not ready to deal with such important issues through dialogue, but were irresponsibly causing unnecessary tensions, the Ministry of Labour and Pension System said in a statement on Tuesday evening.

The leaders of seven unions announced on Tuesday they would not meet with the caretaker government and stressed that they expected the 6% increase to be included in salaries for December or else they would take legal action. They said they were certain that the conditions were good to honour the agreement to increase salaries in the public sector in the case of GDP growth.

The statement said that the government regretted such a decision because it was confident that the unions, just like the government, shared the view that all problems should be dealt with through dialogue "in the spirit of social partnership".

The ministry on Tuesday addressed a letter to the nine unions signatories to the agreement informing them that the meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, had been cancelled following the decision of the majority of the unions.
