Group slams attempt to close Sisak oil refinery

A group for the defence of the Sisak Oil Refinery and the preservation of jobs in the refinery, in the strongest terms on Friday condemned the latest attempt to close the refinery as a condition to continue with the modernisation of the Rijeka Oil Refinery.

The Hungarian energy company MOL has not fulfilled its contractual obligations and demands the closure of the Sisak refinery with no guarantees that the Rijeka refinery will be modernised, the group said in a press release, adding that MOL was again using the political vacuum and disorder in Croatia to put the final nail in the coffin of the Sisak refinery and the INA oil company as a whole.

MOL demanded the closure of the Sisak refinery at an INA management board meeting on July 27 but the Croatian members on the board stopped it by preventing a quorum, the press release said.

The group expects political parties and state institutions to reach a national consensus on INA and asks all relevant political parties to state their views on the Sisak refinery and INA before the parliamentary election in September.

The group again called on the caretaker government and the Croatian members on INA's management and supervisory boards to prevent the adoption of a decision to close the Sisak refinery.

The group has been active since September 2014 and comprises unionists active in the refinery and members of an association of war veterans from Sisak.
