HDZ chief believes deal between his party and Bridge still possible

Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader Tomislav Karamarko after consultations with President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic on Tuesday on a new government said that it was still possible for the HDZ-led Patriotic Coalition and the Bridge reformist party that emerged third in the parliamentary election, to come to agreement.

"I hope, the statement we issued yesterday was fair and sincere. We do not believe in a tripartite government, we believe in a bipartite government," Karamarko told reporters when asked about possible scenarios after cross-party negotiaitons on a future cabinet.

Karamarko said that Croatia was in a such bad state of affairs that it could not longer be exposed to experiments conducted by bad people.

Asked if the President may opt for calling a new, early election, after inconclusive negotiations since the November 8 election has resulted in a hung parliament, Karamarko said that that depended on what stage negotiations were at and what might be agreed upon.

"I think that the President will exercise her rights and decide what she should, after judging what is best," Karamarko told reporters in the President's Office after the consultations.

The President of the Republic is expected to address the nation on Tuesday afternoon.
