HDZ electoral convention starts

Delegates of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party gathered in Zagreb's Vatroslav Lisinski concert hall around noon on Saturday for the 17th general electoral convention at which they will elect the party's deputy leader, vice-presidents and members of the HDZ Presidency, and other bodies relevant for the functioning of the party in the next four years.

The event was opened by the party's secretary-general and candidate for HDZ deputy leader, Milijan Brkic, who was welcomed with a round of warm applause, unlike party chief Tomislav Karamarko, who received a lukewarm welcome despite repeated calls by the event's animator for a more energetic welcome.

Apart from 2,122 party delegates, the event is also being attended by numerous guests, including the leaders and other senior representatives of other parties comprising the HDZ-led Patriotic Coalition and Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic, however, there were no representatives from the HDZ's partner in the government, the Bridge party.
