HDZ leader: Agreement with Bridge ensures fair division of portfolios

Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader Andrej Plenkovic said on Friday that he was pleased with the decision by the National Council of the Bridge party to accept cooperation with the HDZ, adding that the agreement reached by the two parties ensured a fair distribution of Cabinet posts reflecting the election results.

Speaking to the press outside HDZ headquarters, Plenkovic said that in the afternoon he would inform the HDZ Presidency and National Council about the negotiations on the formation of government with Bridge, expressing confidence that President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic would give him the mandate to form the government during consultations with her on Monday.

He confirmed that the HDZ had accepted Bridge's proposal that deputy prime ministers would also be responsible for specific portfolios.

Commenting on the rotating role of Parliament Speaker (in the first two years of the term parliament would be presided over by a Bridge representative and in the next two years by a representative of the HDZ), Plenkovic said that this was a novelty in Croatia, but not in other countries or in the European Parliament. "That's good for the functioning of the Sabor," he added.

The decision of the Bridge National Council was also welcomed by HDZ secretary-general Gordan Jandrokovic.

Asked about the plan to incorporate the energy department, which is now part of the Ministry of Economy, into the Environment Ministry, Jandrokovic said that the two areas were compatible, adding that the European Commission also had a commissioner responsible for the environment and energy. "They are very much compatible with each other in these times. Energy and environmental protection go hand in hand, and I think this will be a good solution."
