HDZ MP calls for lustration of media

Member of Parliament Zeljko Glasnovic of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) called on Thursday for the lustration of the media, which he described as the biggest obstacle to true democracy in Croatia.

Glasnovic made the statement while responding to a statement by Social Democrat MP Pedja Grbin, who in a debate on a proposal for new rules of procedure of the office of the information commissioner said that the office was needed today more than ever before, noting that on Wednesday evening reporters waited for hours in the cold for information from a government meeting.

"The biggest obstacle to true democracy in Croatia are the media," Glasnovic replied, calling for lustration of the media.

"People with the code names 'Gizela' and 'Olivier' cannot represent the Croatian media. Today they are the doyens of investigative journalism. It is a disgrace for the state, nothing will come of this state without lustration," said Glasnovic.

Grbin countered by saying that Glasnovic's statement was below the dignity of a member of Parliament.

"I call on you to translate what you have said into a document, let's say a law on lustration, and to submit it to parliament so that we can clear up this issue once and for all," said Grbin.
