HDZ MP Culej likely to be stripped of immunity

The Credentials and Privileges Commission on Wednesday proposed that the Croatian Parliament should strip Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) lawmaker Stevo Culej of immunity from prosecution following a request to that effect from the judicial authorities.

The Vukovar Municipal Court had requested that the immunity should be lifted in Culej's case so as to enable the resumption of proceedings launched against him for disturbance of public order.

Culej is charged with having disturbed public order in September 2013 in Vukovar during a rally against Cyrillic signs on state institutions.

The HDZ MP told Hina that the resumption of proceedings referred to his appeal which the court should now deal with and that he also wanted to be stripped of parliamentary immunity so as to be able to prove that he was not guilty of inciting protesters to violence.

Culej said he hoped that his appeal would be sustained, explaining that his behaviour during the rally was "Gandhi-like".
